I watched this one last Halloween on the Turner Classic Movie Channel. That day they were showing indie horror movies from the ’60s and ’70s. It’s about a social worker who volunteers to take on a difficult, yet fascinating case, of a mentally retarded man. When she meets the family, she senses something is off about Baby’s mother and his sisters. Her suspicions lead her to believe that there’s actually nothing wrong with Baby. He is a healthy man forced to live like an infant! Proving this theory is another matter….
This movie disturbed me a bit.
The first thing that creeped me out was that I understood some of the principles that the Mother and Sisters applied to poor Baby, I was insanely disturbed. Look up Operant Conditioning! Through positive reinforcement and positive punishment, the family trained a healthy man to remain a baby. The abuse itself was disturbing to watch but the reason why they did it kinda made me mad. Baby’s father walked out on the family so the Mother and the Sisters decided to take out their Man-Hate on Baby.
The second thing that disturbed me was the Social Worker’s true reasoning for wanting to save Baby. That was a brilliant plot twist! Throughout the film we thought that the Social Worker was grieving the loss of her husband and that she got attached to Baby. It’s kinda true. Her husband was in a terrible accident that left him severely retarded….so he is exactly like Baby. She wanted a friend for her husband! That is some sick shit!
The third thing that disturbed me was how the Social Worker got away with murder. She lured the Family into her home, killed the Sisters, injured the Mother, buries the Mother alive with the Sisters in a hole where she planned on building a swimming pool for her home. The last scene is the Social Worker with Baby and her Husband playing the pool with the Social Worker’s Mom by the poolside smiling. No one bothered to ask where the Family was and she got Baby without a struggle.
I don’t care who you are, that was creepy as fuck! I’m giving it an 8/10. I enjoyed it but felt that it dragged in some parts and I got a little uncomfortable watching Baby get abused with a cattle prod. Anyway, check it out and let me know what you think!
